Challenge
The extensive renovation and refurbishment of this existing commercial building was completed in 2016 and demonstrates the evolve commitment to sound engineering principles; maintaining much of the existing structure whilst also achieving the client’s aspirations.
Located within a business park setting, the completion of a single-storey roof level extension and expressed cantilever roof entrance area has once again set this building out as a landmark structure.
New external works and covered walkways improve the relationship between renovated structures and the main building. The extension of the front entrance to include a glazed atrium and floating roof, elevates the aspects and prestige of the property.
Internal alterations and a re-think of the atrium space has greatly improved the functionality of the building. Enhanced landscaping and SuDS drainage connections to the on-site attenuation lakes has also provided increased environmental and ecological protection.
Solution
Strengthening the existing foundations was a fundamental part of this project, as was the extension and enhancement of the existing steelwork columns which allowed for the expansion of the single-storey roof level.
Intensive analysis of the existing building provisions was required to ensure that critical elements were accurately recorded, tested and re-designed to maintain structural adequacy.
Considered alterations throughout the building also enabled the required adjustments to be made through displacement and redistribution of structural load paths. These modifications were carefully aligned with architectural aspirations, internal office layouts and the new M&E building service requirements.
Ultimately, the success of this engineering project was due to a close and pragmatic working relationship between all the project consultants; working alongside the main contractor.
