Kirkstall Bridge Shopping Park

Originally constructed in 1934, the Bridge Road BHS Store in Kirkstall needed an overhaul and London Metric Property had big plans to transform the old structure into a new £40 million retail development. With a proven track record and expertise in commercial redevelopment, Evolve were the ideal candidates to take on the project as both the Civil and Structural Engineers.

Challenge

Challenge

The building and associated external areas were demolished re developed with a new 120,000 sq ft retail and leisure space and first floor Gym.  Externally, a new feature clock tower designed by a famous local clockmaker was erected and provision allowed for 356 free car parking spaces.

Solution

During the design process the substructure options were analysed and a Pencol ground improvement system was chosen allowing a ground bearing slab and traditional strip and pad foundations to be used. These slabs and foundations were designed to accommodate the installation of tenant mezzanine structures.

A key feature of the design was the cantilevered steel framed canopy around the perimeter, projecting signage zones at the shop fronts and Brise Soleil features were installed across the glazed elevations of each shop.
